Ancient Town Centre and Decumans

The Ancient Town Centre and Decumans was that of the first settlement of Neapolis, the “new city”, so called to distinguish it from Palepolis, the old city, Parthenope, that stood in the area of Megaride and Pizzofalcone. The urban plan of Neapolis was that of a chessboard formed by three wide roads from east to west, called “decumans”, intersected by a series of connecting roads from north to south. The ancient centre of Naples is built in stratifications of various ages beginning from the Greco-Roman period up to today.
